Eight-year-old Kiwi student Amelia Abbott will have her artwork displayed on the google.co.nz homepage for millions to see.
Amelia Abbot from Nelson’s Hampden Street School was announced as the winner of the inaugural New Zealand Doodle 4 Google competition in November 2009. The competition, held in association with The Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa, asked students to create a Google ‘doodle’, based on the Google logo, to share their vision of New Zealand.
Amelia’s winning design, titled ‘Green and Gorgeous’, will replace the Google logo on the Google New Zealand homepage, www.google.co.nz, on Wednesday 3 February 2010, during the first week back at school for most New Zealand school kids.
Google’s Annie Baxter says, “Since 1999, the Google logo has been used to celebrate a variety of important events and anniversaries – last year , for the first time, Google asked New Zealand students to give the Google logo a uniquely Kiwi makeover by creating a doodle to reflect the theme of ‘My New Zealand’.
The customisation of the Google logo first took place in 1999, and Dennis Hwang and the Google doodle team have since celebrated events, anniversaries and holidays worldwide with doodles that incorporate the Google logo – including ANZAC Day and the anniversary of Sir Edmund Hillary’s historical ascent of Mt Everest.
“Judge Dennis Hwang – Google’s original doodler – felt that Amelia’s doodle communicated her colourful vision of New Zealand beautifully, incorporating well-known icons such as the Kiwi and silver fern. We’re really excited to be able to share her artwork with millions of Google users on the google.co.nz homepage to mark the start of the school year.”
Amelia was one of thousands of students from more than 600 schools across the country to enter the competition, winning a laptop for herself and $10,000 worth of technology equipment for her school.
