Kirsten Dunst in Tokyo – Cosplay Video Shoot

Kirsten Dunst was spotted running around Tokyo's Akihabara district in an outfit reminiscent of "Sailor Moon." It turned out Dunst was filming a video with director McG called "Akihabara Majokko Princess" for artist and business entrepreneur Takashi Murakami's "Pop Life" exhibition at London's Tate Gallery.

Now the film has leaked online, and in accordance with initial rumors, Dunst does sing the 1980 Vapors' hit "Turning Japanese" -- a song that may not be about masturbation as initially believed but is certainly not actually about Japan. In fact, using the song or its title in reference to anything Japanese is probably the greatest cliché of English Japan coverage outside of photos of a geisha talking on a cell phone.

Murakami's video project, however, goes for the shallowest interpretation, twisting the "Turning Japanese" mantra into shorthand for the global embrace of Japanese pop culture. Starring in the video are the heroes of the "Japan Cool" movement Murakami himself and Nigo -- founder of street fashion brand A Bathing Ape.

This sounds like a high-concept, big-budget art project on paper, but the overall effect is a cringe-worthy parade of clichés upon which Murakami never makes any sort of artistic statement. The video only starts to make sense when viewed through Murakami's usual modus operandi: Selling the West the Japan it wants rather than the Japan that exists. In other words, "Akihabara Majokko Princess" is not as much art as a pop culture fairy tale for Anglo-American eyes.

Before you hit play this is a warning! Some images in this video could be offensive so I'm going to have to slap a NSFW tag on it.

Vapors' classic "Turning Japanese"

A small gallery for those stuck at work that cannot look at the video :D

Battle Angel Alita – James Cameron

baa_1_cover Now that Avatar is in theatres, it's time for legendary filmmaker James Cameron to set his sights on his next big project. Time and time again, we've been hearing that it'll be Battle Angel Alita, but things are a lot more solid now that Cameron's partner in crime, Jon Landau, is talking about how it definitely will happen.

After Avatar 2, of course.

Speaking with MTV's Splash Page, Landau talks about how invested Cameron is in the project, along with some of the developments they've had with the script. Talking about Cameron and Laeta Kalogridis working together on the script:

We were familiar with the anime that had been produced, we were familiar with one of the main books. But she opened us up to the other nine books that exist, and how rich that world is.

So, there will be a greater focus on the manga as opposed to the original intention of drawing mostly from the anime. An expanded world, more intensity, and a new name. According to Landau, Cameron only does T&A-titled movies. We might see Alita: Battle Angel across the marquee a few years down the road.

Japan may charge anti-whaling activist

About damn time. I don't really agree to the whole whaling thing but people have to remember they are only dumb sea mammals. When it comes down to it "can't we just chill?"

Yes it sounds a little weird but i kinda feel more for the whalers than any of the other guys and if there was a whale burger on sale I would muscle my way to the front of the line. Then again i would do the same for some dog on a stick.

TOKYO — Japan may press charges against a New Zealand anti-whaling activist who boarded one of its ships in Antarctic waters, officials said Tuesday.

Activist Peter Bethune climbed aboard the Japanese fleet's security ship, the Shonan Maru 2, from a jet ski under cover of darkness early Monday with stated plans to make a citizens' arrest of its captain Hiroyuki Komiya.

Bethune was captain of powerboat the Ady Gil, which was smashed in a collision with the whaling vessel on January 6, and wanted to detain captain Komiya over the "attempted murder" of its six crew in the crash.

Instead, Japan may now arrest and charge Bethune, who remains in Japanese custody, in the latest chapter of the increasingly heated confrontations between the whalers and the militant Sea Shepherd activists who have harassed them for weeks in international waters.

Japanese commercial offends Maori group

Who gives a crap.

Some people are angry in New Zealand because a Japanese commercial used the haka dance without permission and made it look and sound like “crap”:

The Japanese commercial for Coke Zero, features popstar Namie Amuro alongside what advertising agency copy describes as “a troupe of studs from Kiwiland in the traditional Maori haka dance”.

The men are actors wearing jerseys similar to All Black kit, but without the silver fern, and their movements appear to be from the Ka Mate haka.

Ngati Toa are considered the custodians of Ka Mate. Spokesman Te Ariki Wi Neera said an advertising agency had approached the iwi through the New Zealand embassy in Tokyo.

“We told them that if they wanted to use Ka Mate they needed to talk to us first. They declined to engage when they saw we were serious about protecting it.”

He had not seen the ad, but was unimpressed after hearing it described: “We would have been happy to work with them, but it sounds like crap.”

19-year-old high school student busted: Kiddie porn site

Starting 'em young, aren't you? This guy was so young that it almost wasn't creepy that he was lusting over children.

A student from Souma City was arrested yesterday for being the one that heads up a child pornography BBS website. He did his "work" on free computers available in the city’s culture center. Not the brightest perv ever.

What does he have to say for himself? Get this:

I like looking at nude boys, and had a collection of about 1,500 photos. I wanted people with similar interests to share the same joy.

Japan Today says he was busted specifically over six photos of naked boys under 10 years of age, posted on the site between July and December 2009.
